Exploring the world and recording my response to it
have always been a natural and essential part of my life. Paint, fabric
and thread have been lifelong playthings, and the Australian landscape
with which I am so familiar has been a constant focus.
Many of my richest memories involve interaction with
the landscape. From early childhood I was encouraged to appreciate both
its tiny details and its vast expanses. This influence is a constant
which lies close to the surface of my work, even when seemingly
submerged by other concerns.
I trained in fine art, but for many years textiles,
and particularly fabric printing and quiltmaking, have been central to
my arts practice. I have always found fabric
to be a source of both visual and tactile pleasure, so it not surprising
that it has become my chosen medium of expression.
I grew up surrounded by a rich heritage of art and
textiles, and the understanding that with a little imagination and
makeshift materials, it was possible to create wonders. In quiltmaking,
with its history of innovation born of necessity, I have found the ideal
avenue to explore the ethic of making do, entwined in my work with the
more obvious influence of the landscape.
